Transition to Sixth Form
Transition from Year 11 into our Sixth Form
Moving from Year 11 onto further education in the Sixth Form is a big step and students receive a great deal of support during this time to ensure they are well prepared to confidently face the challenges ahead.
As part of our ongoing careers advice students who apply to the Sixth Form after attending our Open Evening in October receive an individual interview from a member of the Sixth Form team. During this process they receive advice on course choices and their connection to future pathway aspirations, pastoral support they will receive during the transition process and enrichment opportunities that will be open to them when they join our Sixth Form. The interview is supportive and ensures that students are making the right choices at this point in the application process.
Further transition support is provided in the form of an Induction Evening after the GCSE exams have been completed. During this event parents and students are invited into school to meet the Sixth Form team and some of the students and to gain a better understanding of what life in the Sixth Form will be like. At this event students will also receive a pack of information and their Summer Transition Projects for the courses they have chosen. Our Transition Projects are designed to give students a taste of the kind of work they will do in their academic and vocational A Levels and act as an introduction to the first few weeks of work they will do at the start of their courses.
Finally on joining the Sixth Form in September students embark upon a supportive transition programme in their tutorial time, covering such topics as: getting to know you, work organisation and managing independent study, transferrable skills and where to find help and support if things don’t go to plan.
Our transition programme has been carefully thought out to provide students with all the support, confidence and skills they need to become competent independent learners and successful A level students.
